I went and purchased a SkyCaddie SG5 a couple of months ago and have been blown away by their ease of use and how they knocked a few shots of my round. So anyway I was now curious to see how they fared up against a dedicated Laser Rangefinder. Well I managed to blag a Bushnell Tour V2 last week and tried it out over a couple rounds to see how it fared.
I must admit the Bushnell Rangefinder is a must for anyone serious about their golf. The accuracy is brilliant when measuring the distance to the flag. Bushnell claim =/- 1 yard accuracy upto 1000 yards and I would say that are not far out with claim. The unit itself is not that unwieldy but needs a bit of time to get used to it. The Busnell Tour V2 is legal in comps providing the old committee have passed the required local rule.
In conclusion if you just want a yardage to the front, back or centre of the green then go with the SkyCaddie as they are so quick and simple to use. If you want exact yardages and are that competent that you can play to them, then the Bushnell Tour V2 Golf Rangefinder could be a better investment.

New out the box this spring comes the much awaited TaylorMade R9 Driver.
What makes this driver such an innovation is it’s ability to be customised beyond belief. Never before has a golf driver been launched that claims to be the most customisable club ever produced. Most of us golfers are well aware of the original R7 Quad that was released a few years back with its movable weights in the head of the club.
Well now Taylor Made have gone one step further and it is now possible to completely remove the head from the shaft. This technology is not new as interchangeble heads and shafts were launched last year. Where the TaylorMade R9 Driver differs is that you can do all the necessary customisation with just one head and one shaft. The tip of the new R9 driver has a sleeve that can be twisted to one of eight different positions to give the desired loft and lie angle. Adjusting the special sleeve on the shaft tip will alter face angle giving a closed, open or square face. Combined with the removable weights in the head a combination of 24 different flight characteristics can be obtained. More than enough I would have thought keep the most equipment obsessed golf happy for many an hour.

The new 2009 Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls appeared for the first time at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii in the first PGA Tournament of the new year. Ten players competed with the new balls including Past Major Winner Davis Love III. Other players who gave them a spin were Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas and J.B. Holmes.
The winner that week was Geoff Ogilvy who didn’t take a chance on a change this time round, but trusted the Pro V1 from the 2007 incarnation of the world beating ball.
Sure to be hit around the world, both versions of the Titleist ball of choice are expected to hit the shops in the UK around March 2009.
Titleist Pro V1
Minor updates to the Titleist Pro V1 include an improved 3 piece multilayer design with a larger core that claims to give a softer feel to the ball whilst offering an improvement on distance over the 2007 Pro V1. The inner casing has been made thinner that will improve the famous Titleist Drop and Stop action. They have also updated the cover that is more durable.
Titleist Pro V1x
The 332 dimple design of the Pro V1x has remained the same whilst a dual core construction allows a lower spin rate than the Pro V1 thus making it more suitable to the amateur golfer.
Recommended price is in the region of £45 which seems a bit steep at the moment. You can pick up some bargains for the 2007 Pro V1 by visiting www.prov1.org.uk

Its that time of year when no golfer in their right mind would venture out on the course without being equipped to face what ever the great British weather is likely to throw at them.
Hats, mittens, brollys and not forgetting a decent set of waterproofs are the order of the day. Even on a bright crisp day, a jacket or windtop would be stuffed into the bag. But who ventures outside without wearing the obligatory waterproof trousers. Not only do they keep the lower half of the body warm but they also protect your trousers from picking up moisture and mud from the course.
So now may be the time to treat yourself to a new set of golf waterproofs. I don’t know about you, but I think a spare pair of waterproof golf trousers is a must. There is nothing worse than getting kitted up for a round and finding that the you forgot to dry out the old leggings from the last time you played.
So lets have a quick look at what’s new in the trouser department for 2009.
Galvin Green Alf Gore-Tex™ Trouser - £150
A bit on the pricey side but these are probably the best money can buy.
Apparently they boast a lifetime guarantee so they could well be a good investment.
Sunderland of Scotland Tournament Trouser - £100
Quality trouser from Sunderland as per usual. Bundles of velcro, leg zips, belt loops, storm pockets and a fly zip. This would be my choice if I was in the market for a new set of golf waterproofs.
Ping Collection Tour F3D Trouser - £50
No nonsense golf waterproof from the Ping Collection. Perfect as spare set to keep in the car or locker.

It has been announced today that Colin Montgomerie will lead the European Ryder Cup team into battle against the USA at Celtic Manor in 2010. A firm favourite with the selection committee Monty was up against some seroius contenders including Woosnam, Lyle and Olazabal.
A couple of weeks back Monty was mobbed by reporters at the Qatar Masters as it had been leaked that he was in the frame. He seemed as surprised as I was that he was even considered, let alone in the running.
I find it unfathomable that this has come about at this time in his career. Surely such a competitor that Monty is he will be doing his upmost to qualify for next years Ryder Cup. He should have been picked as wild card by Faldo last time out but was seen over by Poulter and Casey. Now don’t get me wrong I thought Poults played a blinder at Valhalla but to get a pick over Monty was a mistake by the captain.
So what does Monty do for the next 18 months, does his schedule change now that he has taken on the captaincy. Who knows. Surely it would be better to pick a captain who has no playing agenda on the Euro Tour, let alone trying to qualify for the majors. Monty has plenty of time to take the stage and represent the European Team, but not next year. How long has poor old Sandy Lyle got too wait before he gets his chance. Looks to me that he has been put on the back burner for ever.
Monty is the wrong choice. Should have put Woosy back in charge for the 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales.

Just a quickie.
It looks as though Stenson is odds on favourite for the Ned Bank Challenge after shooting a 63 in the 1st round.
But it gets a bit interesting as there is a bunch of class players viaing for the second spot and they are all within 2 shots of each other.
One of those players is Trevor Immelman who at the moment is 125/1. Got to be one of the best EW bets of the season.
I’m off down the bookies.

They have been all the rage for golfers of all ages and abilities for the last few years. It now seems acceptable that the electric golf trolley is not just for use for senior golfers. Go to any club in the UK and you will see them in use by all and sundry.
Yes the electric golf trolley has finally arrived. The game of golf has now become so competitive that if it means that using an electric golf trolley will give you the edge over your playing partners then it is OK. Mental strength is such an important part of competing in sport at any level and never more it seems in golf. Lugging a bag about for 18 holes with full set of golf clubs plus all the extra bits of clothing needed especially this time of year will have an effect your game no matter how fit you are.
Playing in the winter months can take its toll on your endurance and most golf clubs allow the use of golf trolleys all year round. There are plenty of deals to be had at this time of year as retailers try and shift some stock. If you are thinking of purchasing an electric golf trolley it pays to shop around as prices can vary considerably. To help you decide on a purchase visit www.electricgolftrolley.org.uk where you can read up on the latest electric golf trolleys and also get up to prices and in stock information from the leading UK Golf Retailers.

Sergio is on the prowl this coming weekend and hopes to knock Phil Mickelson off the 2nd spot of the Official World Rankings.
Garcia has to win in Shangai on Sunday and hope that the defending champion Mickelson blows up somewhere.
It’s going be a tall order but the Spanaird has hit some great form in recent weeks and it has the making of being a great tournament.
Latest betting at the HSBC Shangai:
Mickelson 9/1
Garcia 10/1
Harrington 12/1
Kim 12/1
Karlsson 15/1
Look out for Adam Scott at 25/1. A decent EW price in my books.

Robert Karlsson is on his way to his first Order of Merit after shooting 2 over at Valderrama in the 1st day. The final days play will throw up all types of computations with Westwood, Harrington and Jimenez all in with a shout.
If you fancy a bet in the last comp of the season here are the latest odds:
Garcia 15/8
Westwood 6/1
Clarke 22/1
Karlsson 25/1
McDowell 28/1
My tip for the weekend is Garcia. He played brilliantly on the final day last week and is sure bet for this one.
Eachway: Hedblom at 40/1
